TEAM NEWS

Roma

Unfortunately for Roma, Wednesday’s disappointing 2-2 draw with Fiorentina cost them more that just three vital points. Taddei and Aquilani both picked up slight muscular injuries, which will see them both out of action for two or three weeks, meaning they will miss this weekend’s clash with Inter, and next week’s trip to Manchester.

In better news for the Giallorossi, Totti has recovered from injury, Perrotta from illness and Juan returns, as all three are certain to play against Inter. Cassetti is still another three to four weeks away with a leg injury.

Inter

Things are looking positive on the injury side of things at Inter, as Marco Materazzi, who suffered a freak injury for Italy, whilst playing a friendly against Hungary, looks set to be back playing within the next few weeks.

And for this Saturday' contest against Roma, Roberto Mancini will be bolstered by the return of ex-Roma defender Cristian Chivu, who looks set to play his first game in Nerazzurri colours, since his transfer in the summer. Vieira is still out injured, whilst Maicon is still suspended for the red card he received against Livorno.

POSSIBLIE STARTING LINE-UPS

Roma (4-2-3-1) Doni; Tonetto, Juan, Mexes, Panucci; Pizarro, De Rossi; Giuly, Perrotta, Mancini; Totti

Inter (4-2-2) Julio Cesar; Zanetti, Cordoba, Samuel, Chivu; Cesar, Stankovic, Cambiasso Figo; Ibrahimovic, Crespo

Inter-Sampdoria 3-0: Ladies&Gentlemen, welcome at the "Zlatan Ibrahimovic Show"

Partita piacevole giocata a ritmi elevati.

FENERBAHCE - INTER 1-0

MARCATORI: 43' Deivid

FENERBAHCE (4-4-2): D.Volkan 6,5; Turaci 6,5 , Lugano 6,5, Edu 6.5, Roberto Carlos 7; Deniz 6,5, Aurelio 6,5, Wederson 6,5, Alex 7,5; Kezman 5,5 (67’ Semih 6), Deivid 6,5. A disposizione: Boran, Volkan, Yasin, Kazim, Bilgin. Allenatore: Zico 7

Inter Milan Stunned By Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce 1-0 Inter Milan

It wasn't pleasant, and it most certainly wasn't pretty - for Inter Milan that is - as they crashed to a 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce in Turkey...

Inter Milan Stunned By Fenerbahce

A sensational first half striks from Deivid saw Fenerbahce pick up a 1-0 home win over Italian champions Inter Milan in Turkey.

Alex went past Maxwell inside the area, crossed it in, and Deivid's smashing overhead kick beat Julio Cesar to send the Turkish giants ahead on the stroke of half time.

It was a lead they would keep through the game despite the introduction of Luis Figo and Hernan Crespo, with Roberto Mancini's boys looking very flat.

To be fair to them, the Nerazzurri were hit by the absences of the likes of Vieira, Materazzi and Chivu. However they were still expected to put up a better show than they did, particularly with Ibrahimovic and Suazo up front.

It was Fenerbahce who had the better of the early exchanges, Mateja Kezman forcing a save out of Julio Cesar in the 9th minute after getting on the end of a dangerous cross.

There were some decent moved for Inter thereafter, but not enough teamwork to get passed the alert Turks. In fhe home side who had the next chance.

Roberto Carlos whipped in a rocketing cross-cum-shot from the left, one which Cesar let slip. Thankfully for him, the ball was cleared in the nick of time.

Inter were looking woefully out of sorts, and it looked like they would need some individual magic to get something from this game. That came, but at the wrong end, as Deivid's superb overhead kick found the back of Cesar's net on the stroke of half time.

The second half saw the likes of Figo and Hernan Crespo come on as Mancini tried everything he could. Nothing quite worked, though, as Alex ran the show for Fenerbahce, assisted by another great Champions League outing for the ageless Roberto Carlos.

The duo combined once again on the hour mark, but Cesar managed to keep the ball out of the net. Alex then found Edu with a dangerous free-kick, but the header went wide.

The final minutes saw some purpose shown by Inter, with Stankovic looking determined in particular, but nothing quite worked, which means that Inter will need to stage another group stage comeback.

UEFA Champions League Group stage - 19 September 2007 Fenerbahçe 1 - 0 Inter Milan Highlight Goal Videos

Group stage - 19 September 2007 20:45 (CET) - Sükrü Saraçoglu - Istanbul
Fenerbahçe
Internazionale
Fenerbahçe20:45
Internazionale

As Fenerbahçe SK prepare to compete in their fifth UEFA Champions League campaign they will not want be reminded before the arrival of FC Internazionale Milano that their heaviest home defeat in the competition was inflicted by visitors from Milan.

• That came in November 2005 when Andriy Shevchenko equalled a competition record by scoring all the goals in a thumping 4-0 victory for AC Milan. Zico‘s team welcome Inter to the Sükrü Saraçoglu stadium on Matchday 1 determined that the outcome will be a lot different this time although history is not in their favour.

• In six home fixtures against opponents from Italy in UEFA club competition, Fenerbahçe have won only two and those games were the only time they managed to score. Away from Istanbul they have fared even worse, losing all five games in Italy, including the group stage fixture in 2005/06 against Milan 3-1.

• The first home success against Italian opposition was in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup first round when they beat Parma FC 1-0, thus ending a dispiriting run of three successive defeats, all by 1-0. They notched up their second win in last season's UEFA Cup group stage with a 3-0 dismissal of US Città di Palermo.

• Retaining their Turkish title enabled Fenerbahçe to enter the UEFA Champions League after an absence of one season. Their best campaign to date was in 2004/05 when they finished third in Group D; their first attempt was in 1996/97.

• Three years ago Fenerbahçe won three games in the group and began with a 1-0 home victory against AC Sparta Praha, the only time they have picked up a victory on Matchday 1. In 24 group fixtures they have only recorded five victories and have a total of 17 defeats - there have been only two draws.

• Inter, twice winners of the European Champion Clubs' Cup, in 1963/64 and 1964/65, have never previously met a Turkish team in the UEFA Champions League. There have been six such fixtures in the UEFA Cup, and coach Roberto Mancini's club have won all three home ties and one of the away games, 3-1 at Adanaspor AS. Their last game in the country came in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup first round when they drew 0-0 against Besiktas JK.

• In their eighth attempt to win the UEFA Champions League and their sixth successive season in the group stages, Inter will be hoping to go further than in the 2002/03 campaign which brought them a place in the semi-finals, their best achievement to date, particularly as their city rivals celebrated their third title success in Athens in May and their seventh European Champion Clubs' Cup crown in total. Some consolation came as Inter retained their Serie A title with a 22-point advantage over AS Roma.

• The Nerazzurri traditionally make a strong UEFA Champions League challenge but have become used to bowing out just before the action really intensifies. Last season, when they were beaten in the first knockout round by Valencia CF on the away goals rule, was the first time in three seasons that they had not won a place in the last eight.

• The campaign started poorly with defeats in the opening two fixtures and in neither game did Inter manage to score. It defied recent history because in the previous three editions they had always celebrated opening-game wins, in each case without the concession of a goal, with two coming away from home.

• Recent Fenerbahçe recruit Roberto Carlos began his European career with Inter during the 1995/96 campaign. He played 30 league games, scoring six goals, before leaving for Real Madrid CF.

• PSV Eindhoven and PFC CSKA Moskva are the other teams in Group G.

Crespo: We Are Back In The Title Race

Inter striker Hernan Crespo scored in Inter’s 2-0 victory over Catania yesterday afternoon and insists that the Nerazzurri are back on track in Serie A.

Crespo: We Are Back In The Title Race

The Argentinean striker injured himself during this summer’s Copa America and has not played for Inter since the Coppa Italia final against Roma on May 17. However the prolific bomber marked his first appearance of the season with the opener on 15 minutes and admits he is glad to be back.

“Considering this is my first official game, I am satisfied. The injury I picked up in the Copa America took longer to heal than I thought but now it is better,” Crespo explained.

“It is always difficult to play after the international break but we played well and won the game. With two consecutive victories we have repaired the damage from the draw with Udinese and we are back in the title race.

“Now we must look forward to the Champions League game in Istanbul and I confirm that I am ready to play. Mancini knows he can count on me, whether it be for five or 90 minutes.”

Inter kick off their European campaign with a tricky trip to Turkish club Fenerbahce. Coach Roberto Mancini will be hoping that his team can improve on last season’s Champions League performance when they were disappointingly knocked out by Valencia in the first knock-out stage.

Inter to lose Vieira for trip to Turkey

France midfielder Patrick Vieira seems certain to miss FC Internazionale Milano's UEFA Champions League opener at Fenerbahçe SK on Wednesday after returning from international duty with a thigh injury.

Mancini concern
The 31-year-old shook off a problem with his left thigh to feature in Les Bleus' UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers against Italy and Scotland but has been unable to train with the Nerazzurri since returning to Milan, ruling him out of the squad for Sunday's Serie A visit of Calcio Catania. "Patrick thought he was ready to play for France, although he probably wasn't," said Inter coach Roberto Mancini. "I don't know how long he will be sidelined for but I think it will be very difficult to have him available for the Champions League game. We want him to recover completely without any risks."

Calcio's Best Paid Coaches: Mancio Leads Carlo

Inter boss Roberto Mancini has been revealed as the best paid coach in Serie A, in a list compiled by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Calcio's Best Paid Coaches: Mancio Leads Carlo

The former Lazio and Fiorentina tactician, who guided Inter to the Scudetto last season, earns £3.4m a year. He also holds a charitable bonus clause in his contract that sees him bag an extra £750,000 if the Nerazzurri retain their Serie A title.

The next highest-paid boss is Milan’s Carlo Ancelotti who receives an annual income of £3.1m. In third place is Luciano Spalletti, who is paid £1.3m, while the only other million pound earners are Fiorentina’s Cesare Prandelli and Juventus’ Claudio Ranieri, who both pocket £1m per season.

The gap in riches between the big and small clubs becomes more and more evident as we move down the table of earnings. Inter Rocked By Chivu Injury

Romanian defender Cristian Chivu has picked up a shoulder injury, meaning that he will join the lengthy list of absentees ahead of Inter's Champions League clash with Fenerbahce next week...

Inter Rocked By Chivu Injury

Cristian Chivu's injury is bad enough from a Serie A perspective, but where the Romanian hitman will be missed the most is in Europe.

The stopper has contracted a shoulder injury, meaning that he'll sit out the weekend tie at home to Catania.

Moreover, he'll miss next week's away clash in the Champions League with Turkish cracks Fenerbahce - as will, seemingly, half of the nerazzurri squad.

Inter crashed out in the knockout stages last year to Valencia, the conclusion to the tense tie marred by a massive on-pitch brawl involving members of both teams.

Nicolas Burdisso, Maicon and Ivan Cordoba were all suspended in the aftermath of that tie, meaning that they'll miss the Turkey visit, while Chivu joins them on the sidelines after sustaining that injury against Germany in a midweek friendly with Romania.

Walter Samuel, then, is set to play through the pain barrier in Istanbul, with Nelson Rivas the sole, fully-fit, recognisable central option for a fast-depleted central line.

Inter have never played Fenerbahce in European competition.

Spain Remain Top Of UEFA Club Rankings

Despite AC Milan winning the Champions League, England leapfrogged Italy in the UEFA country coefficient rankings for European clubs, while Spain maintained the top spot. Romania were the biggest winners as they jumped three places, while Greece sank seven in an all-change listing for the next season...

UEFA's club coefficient rankings for each country have been decided based on last season's continental results, with these seedings set to decide how many places each country gets in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup.

As expected, England, Italy and Spain comprise the top three, the Spaniards coming out on top and England narrowly jumping ahead of the Italians, although each of the two receives the same number of places for continental competition.

Then come France, Germany and Portugal with healthy allocations each, and then the last of the nations to receive guaranteed Champions League places.

And the big winner here is Romania, who jumped ahead of the Netherlands and down-seven Greece to gain a further two UEFA Cup spots and a great chance at automatic Champions League qualification.

The usual array of further nations - from Russia to Scotland and from the Czech Republic to Turkey - battle it out just below, while Denmark have crept into the top 21, too.

Here are the top 21 countries, with the number of places they rose or fell based on last year's rankings:

Vieira Hits Out At Inter Management

France skipper Patrick Vieira had some harsh words to say about Inter Milan's management.

Vieira Hits Out At Inter Management

Patrick Vieira is not an easy person to deal with, or that is what the managers at Inter must be thinking at the moment, after the latest statements made by the Frenchman following the club's suggestion that he not appear against Scotland.

"I've never chosen between the club and the Federation," he began. "If I am well I play, that goes for both my club and my country. I have no regrets."

The club's decision to communicate with him via the press did not go down well with him either.

"If at Inter they prefer to speak to their players through the newspapers rather than telling me what they think, that's their problem."

"I'm not used to talking about these things through the press. I am disappointed; not angry, just disappointed," he concluded.

Materazzi: "I'm Sorry, Zidane"

Marco Materazzi has given yet another interview touching on the dramatic moments that saw Zinedine 'Zizou' Zidane headbutt him during last year's World Cup final. This time, however, he has offered an apology of sorts to the former French international...

Materazzi: "I'm Sorry, Zidane"

Marco 'Matrix' Materazzi has offered something of an apology to Zinedine Zidane, over a year after the Italian's victorious World Cup final appearance.

During the Berlin clash, Materazzi apparently made an insulting comment to Zizou, who responded by headbutting the Azzurri defender full-force in the chest.

Zizou has barely spoken of the incident, while Materazzi only recent revealed what he actually said - a slur on the Frenchman's sister.

Now, the Inter defender has issued a pseudo-apology through the Spanish media.

He said in an interview, "I want to apologise to Zidane. For me he was a football god.

"But, in saying that, I couldn’t have behaved any other way and I don't think anyone else could have."

Materazzi attempted to show a light-hearted side over the rest of the interview, reflecting jovially on the recent controversy borne of Raymond Domenech's comments on the state of the Italian game.

The French coach speculated about the state of refereeing in matches involving the Italians, but 'Matrix' was unfazed by these comments.

He, indeed, insisted that he had no enemies in football, and it was quite the opposite when it came to Domenech.

Matrix added, "Domenech is smart, I knew that after he named me Man of the Match after last year's World Cup final.

"I knew at the time that I was, but it took him a year to catch up."

Controversially, he revealed his joking nature with Serbian international Dejan Stankovic, saying,

"I don't have any enemies, I have no prejudices. Sure, I joke a lot. I joke with Dejan Stankovic [Inter player], calling him a gypsy, yet we share a room together at pre-season camp.

"It's the same with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and [AC Milan's] Gennaro Gattuso. He's like a brother to me."

'Matrix' is currently recovering from injury sustained against Hungary in Italy's recent friendly defeat.

Inter And France To Clash Again Over Vieira

A club versus country row seems set to break out once more if Raymond Domenech chooses to select Inter midfielder Patrick Vieira tomorrow night.

Inter And France To Clash Again Over Vieira

Despite the former Arsenal star’s denial of a bust-up, Inter coach Roberto Mancini was said to be furious with the decision to field Vieira for 90 minutes against Italy on Saturday.

Vieira has not played in Serie A yet this season due to a calf strain picked up in France’s friendly with Slovakia on August 22. His only playing time for Inter this campaign was 68 minutes in the Italian Super Cup.

“I hope that he doesn’t play on Wednesday night,” Inter director general Marco Branca told French newspaper L’Equipe

“I’m obviously just thinking about the interests of my club as Patrick is very important to us. However, whatever decision is made I will respect.”

Despite Inter’s protests, Vieira is almost certain to partner Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele at the heart of Les Bleus midfield.

France are currently top of their Euro 2008 qualifying group with 19 points from eight games. Scotland sit in second with 18, with Italy in third, a point further back. Ukraine are fourth with 13 points, having played a game less.

Inter Tracking Toulouse Star

Inter Milan are reported to have developed an interest in promising Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko.

According to the French media, Inter sent observers to watch the 18-year-old during Toulouse’s match against Auxerre last Saturday, and they would have been impressed with the youngster’s goal-scoring display during the 2-0 victory.

Sissoko made his European debut last month at home to Liverpool against his namesake Momo Sissoko.

Though there is no relation, they both were born in France and have roots in Mali.

I Always Wanted To Stay Here, Says Cruz

The Inter forward just extended his stay with the Nerazzurri till 2009 after joining the club from Bologna in 2002.
Julio Cruz is extremely happy following the new contract he signed with Inter which allowed him to extend his stay with the Italian champions till the 30th of June 2009.

"I'm very happy that I renewed my contract with Inter," he declared to 'Inter Channel'. "I signed today but we had already agreed a long time ago, and I would like to say that I never had any problem with the Club.”

Five seasons have passed since his move from Bologna, but the Argentinean attacker still feels he can give a lot to Inter.

"I'm in my fifth season with the Nerazzurri and here I feel at home," he continued.

"I will try, as always, to give my best in all of the training sessions and the matches for the good of the club which has always proved to believe a lot in me."

Cambiasso On Champions League

Inter Milan midfielder Esteban Cambiasso dreams of Champions League glory, and gives his thoughts on Adriano as well.

Argentine midfield stalwart Estabian Cambiasso spoke of Inter’s Champions League ambitions, admittind that "winning the competition is one of the major goals that is on everybody’s mind this year."

He went on to describe the idiosyncrasies of the competition stating that it was a “strange and difficult tournament” where “one bad evening can ruin a team's hopes and dreams.”

"Hopefully Inter possess the magic that the Champions League asks of its winners," he said.

Adriano Banished From Champions League

Inter Milan have officially left Adriano out of the 25-man squad submitted to UEFA late on Saturday night.

Adriano has been unsettled at Inter Milan over the last ten days, since it became apparent that the club wanted to offload him.

The chances of a last gasp move ended with the close of the summer transfer window, and less that 24 hours later, Inter Milan have confirmed recent rumours by leaving the Brazilian out of their Champions League squad.

As a result, he will not be able to play in the competition, at least until it resumes in February after the fresh round of registration following winter transfer period.

This sees the relationship between the player and the club sink to a new low, even though Roberto Mancini played it cool.

"For me it has been a great disappointment to leave out any player," he said after the game against Empoli.

"My relationship with Adriano? I have spoken with him a lot in these past years and there has always been great confidence on my part.

"As I said in yesterday's press conference, I'm convinced he will return to being the great champion he was. He has to do his bit, and we will also do more to help him. Together, we can do a lot."

Earlier in the week, Adriano refused to move to the likes of Parma or Lazio, or to England, on loan, and the general opinion is that this is Inter's response.

However, that the player will not be Cup-tied, and thus be a lucrative winter target for top clubs, might just have played a part too.

Recoba Completes Torino Transfer

Uruguayan forward Alvaro Recoba has finally completed his move away from the San Siro, leaving Internazionale in favour of Torino...

Recoba Completes Torino Transfer

Alvaro "El Chino" Recoba has signed for Torino, penning a loan deal from Internazionale.

After months of speculation, the Uruguayan has finally completed his transfer, and could slot straight into the Toro squad for this weekend's match with Reggina this weekend.

"El Chino" was out of favour at the San Siro, being fifth or sixth in the pecking order for two striker places and was faced with the possibility of a season in the stands.

He played just thirteen league games last season, scoring once, but will hope to get a once-promising career back on track in Turin.

At the age of 31, his career is drawing to a close, but most feel that he still has the talent to succeed at the top level, after being linked with clubs ranging from Atletico Madrid to Napoli over the summer.

Overall, he's been contracted to the nerazzurri since 1997, scoring 53 Serie A goals in that time. Previously, El Chino served Venezia (on loan from Inter), Nacional and Danubio.
