Recoba Closer To Torino Switch, Confirms Cairo

The President of the Granata declared that the Inter player will probably be joining the Turin based side today.

Recoba Closer To Torino Switch, Confirms Cairo

Alvaro Recoba will finally have the opportunity of playing more consistently as his move to Torino should be finalized by the end of the day.

This was confirmed by the President of Torino, Urbano Cairo, who sounded confident about the probability of the deal.

"We're working on it", he said. "It has not been sealed yet, but I spoke with my friend Moratti, and we got very close as there is very little left between us.

"In the market I don't want to let myself go to easy enthusiasms, but before there is the signature I don't want to delude the fans.

"In the transfer market you never know, but I can say that I would be surprised if this deal does not go through."

This will be the second time ever that Coach Walter Novellino would have Recoba in his squad, with the first time being during their Venezia days.

Inter face contest of champions

FC Internazionale Milano come up against three other reigning domestic champions in UEFA Champions League Group G as they begin their attempt to prove they can match city rivals AC Milan by claiming the continent's premier club competition.

Contrasting styles
PSV Eindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and Fenerbahçe SK are all likely to prove tough opposition for the Italian champions as Inter coach Roberto Mancini acknowledged when he said his side would have to overcome "completely different styles of football". Only PSV and Fenerbahçe of the four sides in the section have met before in UEFA club competition, with the home team coming out on top in each of the four games played.

Roberto Mancini, Inter coach
When you play in an important competition like the UEFA Champions League it's impossible to make a ranking among which teams are more difficult to face. At this level all the teams are important and difficult to face and this is surely the case for the teams we have in our group. We are to play teams with a very good tradition and representing completely different European styles of football. It is definitely a fascinating group.

Ronald Koeman, PSV coach
It's not an unfavourable draw, although there are two long trips in Istanbul and Moscow. The difficulty with these two opponents, Fenerbahçe and CSKA, obviously lies in the away matches. Inter are a massive club in the best traditions of Italy and the reigning champions. They have a number of players who have featured in the Eredivisie. We know how strong Turkish teams are at home, they try to use the atmosphere to their advantage. PSV experienced that not so long ago. CSKA are also a good team, although we play there in late November and that could have an impact.

CSKA coach Valeri Gazzaev
We got a good draw. After Liverpool and Porto were put together it crossed my mind we would be there too but it turned out to be different. We still have quite notable rivals and importantly they are all champions of their countries. Inter are a little better but all the rest are approximately level. I believe we have good chance to qualify from the group and we will do our best to do so.

Ali Bilgin, Fenerbahçe midfielder
All the teams who make it into the Champions League group stage are very strong. When we look at the group, I think we have a chance to qualify for the next round. If we perform as we played in our recent games, we may succeed. We will do our best to represent our country and our team. We have this in mind.

Materazzi: I'll Be Back In Two Months

First it was six months. Then it was the end of November. Now, Marco Materazzi has placed his date of return to competitive football as two months from now, or the start of November...

Materazzi: I'll Be Back In Two Months

Marco Materazzi was his usual outspoken self during the launch of his new book, 'A Life As A Warrior.'

The controversial Italian defender, though, was in buoyant mood as he declared that his recovery is going faster than planned.

"I'll be back in two months," he said, referring to his recuperation after a bizarre injury sustained whilst playing for Italy against Hungary.

The Inter centre-back suffered major thigh trauma after a Hungarian player landed on top of him, with an initial prognosis pointing towards a recovery period of up to six months.

This was quickly shortened to four, then, provisionally, three. But now it seems that he could be back in time for the halfway point of his club's Champions League group stage campaign.

On this subject, he was confident.

"They are tough teams but I believe they are all within our reach. We are Inter and we must never forget this," he said of PSV, CSKA Moscow and Fenerbahce.

"We clearly have a few problems with suspensions and unfortunately my injury has added to these but we must not start crying about them," he added.

Inter Complete Deal For Portugal Prospect Pele

Portuguese Under-21 star Pele in now officially an Inter Milan player after putting pen-to-paper on a five-year deal.
Inter Complete Deal For Portugal Prospect Pele

The 19-year-old midfielder, whose given name is Vitor Hugo Gomes Passos, has been side from northern Portuguese side Guimaraes.

Considering the fact that he is a relative unknown due to playing in the Portuguese second division last season, it is safe say that Roberto Mancini considers him one for the future.

In other Inter news, Italian spots magazine ControCampo are suggesting that there is a growing divide between Mancini and his boss Nerazzurri president Massimo Moratti. They have even speculated that the reason that Inter are looking to loan out Mancini-rejects Alvaro Recoba and Adriano – as opposed to selling them outright - is due to Moratti’s desire to see both players back at the San Siro under a new coach next year.

Recoba's Torino Move Depends On Adriano

Inter president Moratti has stated unequivocally that only one of Alvaro Recoba and Adriano will be allowed to leave the club in this current transfer window. "El Chino", then, needs to wait for the all-clear before he can join Torino...

Recoba's Torino Move Depends On Adriano

Alvaro Recoba's long-awaited departure from the San Siro depends on Adriano.

The unsettled Brazilian forward, known as L'Imperatore, has been linked with permanent transfers to the likes of Manchester City, but the nerazzurri have yet to confirm any deal.

This leaves "El Chino" waiting in the wings. The diminutive Uruguayan has been linked with a move away from Inter Milan for months, with Torino now favourites to land him.

However, coach Novellino will have to wait to find out if he can land the forward, as Internazionale president Massimo Moratti insists that only one of the pair will be allowed to leave.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini needs cover for Ibrahimovic, Cruz and Suazo up front, but is reluctant to field Adriano after recent problems with the troubled forward. This means that neither he nor the president would say no to an Adriano move - but he may be difficult to shift, having already ruled out the prospect of a loan move.

So, Alvaro may be set to leave, just as planned. But it could be a last minute affair...

Alvaro Recoba Set For Torino Switch?

Italian daily La Stampa claims that Alvaro Recoba may finally be on the way out of the San Siro, with a move to Torino imminent - providing the player can agree terms...

Torino president Urbano Cairo has today confirmed that 'Toro' are still in the hunt for out-of-favour Inter forward Alvaro Recoba.

"El Chino" seems set to leave the San Siro after ten years at Inter, with Walter Novellino's side set to make a swoop for the Uruguayan forward.

The 31 year old striker would thus reunite with the man he left behind at Venezia in 1999 after concluding a loan spell.

President Cairo confirmed his club's interest, before adding that this wouldn't present any problems with the squad dynamic.

"First, to add a player of great quality would not be a bad thing at all. Second, I disagree that the arrival of Recoba would cause any problems in the dressing room," he said.

Inter supremo Moratti had earlier confirmed that it would be better for Recoba to seek a club that would give him "continuity" on the pitch, while coach Mancini is said to be amenable to his departure.

The Montevideo-born player has played over 175 Serie A games for the nerazzurri.

Inter Sign Young Keeper

According to the latest reports out of Italy, Inter have completed the acquisition of Enrico Alfonso from Chievo Verona.

The 19-year-old shot-stopper has put pen-to-paper on a five-year deal, with the Nerazzurri reportedly shelling out 1.3m euro for half of his rights.

Alfonso arrives as a direct replacment for Fabian Carini, who recently vacated the number four spot in the Inter goalkeeper hierarchy in favour of a move to Real Murcia.

The Italian champions have not ruled out the possibility of immediately sending out the teenager on loan to gain experience.

Cesar Off As Inter Concede Late Udinese Draw Inter 1-1 Udinese
A very late and unfortunate own goal by Ivan Cordoba meant that Inter Milan failed to start the defense of their crown with the three points that they so coveted. Despite the fortuitous nature of the equalizer, Udinese ultimately deserved to take a point from the match, which at that point looked sure to be decided by an early goal from Dejan Stankovic.

After a generally imrpressive opening 45 from Inter, the sending off of their Brazilian keeper Cesar early in the second-half caused the Scudetto holders to completely lose the plot and in the end they can hardly claim to have been hard done by.
Roberto Mancini sprung a surprise by giving Julio Cruz the nod to partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic up-front, whereas almost everybody was reckoning with a starting debut for David Suazo.
Fellow big money buy Christian Chivu also had to settle for a spot on the bench despite the recent injury suffered by Marco Materazzi meaning that there were no new signings in Inter's starting XI.
Udinese, in contrast, had five new faces in their lineup to go along with their new look yellow away kit, with Italy's latest golden-boy Quagliarella being their most high profile new addition.

First Half
It was an open affair right from the word 'go' with the hosts enjoying the more promising beginning. Figo looked especially up for it from the start and caused havoc in the visitor’s box with a mazy run down the right but none of his teammates were alert enough to meet his clever cutback to the top of the 18.
It did not take long for Udinese to deliver the fist danger signs of their own, however. A flowing counter-attack ended up with the ball at the feet of Quagliarella, but Samuel did well to charge his shot down.
With just eight minutes gone, Stankovic managed to open the campaign for Inter courtesy of some Ibrahimovic magic. The prodigiously gifted Swede flicked up a pass to himself before turning to squeeze a throughball to the Serb midfielder. Storming in from the right, Stankovic first shaped as if to cross but then did exceptionally well to beat keeper at his near post.
Immediately after the goal, the camera panned to Adriano in the stands but – so shortly after having been told that he is no longer un-sellable - the big Brazilian showed no sign of emotion while others cheered around him.
Inter sought to finish their opponents off early and with a quarter-of-an-hour gone they almost got their payoff. Zanetti caused havoc by weaving his way through the Udinese defense in the area before putting a lovely ball on the foot of Stankovic. But this time he ballooned his volley from a similar position from which he had tallied so ruthlessly less than 10 minutes earlier.
The visitors never gave the impression of being a beaten side, however, and soon it was their turn to send their opposing hearts fluttering. A great run by the highly impressive Asamoah left Samuel for dead, but his dangerous low cross was poked away by Cordoba at full stretch almost at the expense of an own goal. On this occassion the Colombian defender did very well, however, as Quagliarella would certainly have leveled matters from close range.
As the minutes ticked on it became increasingly clear that Udinese were not fazed by the early setback. Once again Asamoah was in the thick of things and showed great skill to turn and shoot in one motion, despite Samuel clamouring all over his back, forcing a fine save out of Cesar. The Ghanaian striker was in irrepressible mood, and minutes later he rose a full head above all the rest to meet a corner but could not keep his header down from eight yards out.
It really was an enthralling encounter at this point and Figo and Zlatan were not about to have the show stolen from them. Yet again a tantalising run by Figo resulted in a cross to Ibrahimovic, who put on another audacious juggling clinic under pressure but failed to get enough purchase on the volleyed finish.
The end-to-end action showed no signs of abating, and with half-an-hour gone Quagliarella did ever so well to force his way past Maicon before squaring the ball back to the top of the box for a teammate, but Cesar was equal to the fierce shot that ensued.
On 36 minutes, Cruz – who had been an anonymous figures up until that point – was gifted a chance to make it two-nil, but he ended up rifling a shot well over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy after being set up by some magnificent inter-play by the hosts. A lovely chest-down from Ibra, culminated in a clever first time throghball by Stankovic, but in the end the move did not get the finish it deserved due to some uncharacteristic wastefulness by the lanky Argentine.
The highly watchable fist-half concluded with another warning shot from the hosts but Floro Flores couldn't get quite enough power on a header from a similar position to Asamoah earlier in the game.

Second half
Udinese came out of the tunnel full of intent, and soon after the restart the ever lively Quagliarella got on the end of another excellent counterattack but, after neatly affording himself a yard of space with a slick stepover, his low drive flashed across goal. It was all Udinese to begin the second-half and their positive attitude was soon rewarded, as they gained a numerical advantage which ended up proving decisive.
With a full 35 minutes left on the clock, Cesar wandered out of his box to try to cut off an intended throughball to Asamoah, but instead of dealing with the danger the keeper completely misjudged the bounce and was forced to handle in a panic to prevent the ball from getting past him. This, of course, left the referee with no other choice but to flash red. Francesco Toldo was summoned into action with Cruz elected as the outfield player to be sacrificed.
The Argentine should have few complaints about having to make way, however, as he failed to justify his selection with a sleepwalker of a performance. The slightly greying Toldo immediately had to deal with a dangerous situation but in the end he was able to make a comfortable save off a freekick from a promising position. The visitors continued to boss the game, and Mancini to his credit recognized that something needed to do be done to prevent the balance of powers shifting further away from his side.
On 65 minutes he elected to let Suazo try his hand at swaying things back in their favour. The muscular Honduran came on in exchange for Figo, but aside from bringing some fresh energy he was unable to force the action away from Inter’s end. Minutes later, former Roma defender Chivu was also given his first official run-out as an Interista and showed his versatility by slotting into central midfield after Olivier Dacourt had picked up a knock.
The Romanian international was similarly powerless to prevent the yellow tide that was sweeping towards Inter’s goal and the dam finally bust at a point when the referee was already eyeing his watch. Deep into injury time, Udinese finally achieved the much deserved equalizer.
At first it appeared that Asamoah got his just reward for a hard days work, but the replays revealed that it was actually Cordoba who was unlucky enough to head the ball past his own keeper in a desperate attempt to get his skull to the ball ahed of the Ghanaian. In the end, Inter got what they deserved on the day, as even before Cesar’s clanger they were already guilty of lapses concentration and nervy mistakes that were ill befitting a champion. They could have and should have killed it off in the first half, and can only blame themselves for what followed.

Inter's case for the defence

Add one of the best defenders in Europe - Cristian Chivu - and a striker who scored 36 goals in the last two campaigns - David Suazo - to a squad which dominated Serie A last season and it does not take much to realise who are favourites to win the Scudetto when the new Italian season starts this weekend. Fortunately football does not always follow logic, as FC Internazionale Milano learned to their cost when AS Roma defeated them in the Italian Super Cup on Sunday.

Record breakers
Last season Roberto Mancini's side won the title with an Italian-record total of 97 points, while also setting new highs for consecutive wins (17), most wins (30), most away wins (15), and consecutive away wins (11). Second-placed Roma finished 22 points behind. The Giallorossi may have been the only side to beat Inter in the league, as well as getting the better of them in the Coppa Italia final, but they were never serious contenders for the Scudetto.

'No fear'
Roma's success in head-to-heads against their rivals proved their starting XI was more or less at the same level as Inter's, but the Nerazzurri's larger squad made the difference in the long run. Roma took note and look to have reduced the gap this summer with signings Cicinho, Juan, Mauro Esposito, Ahmed Barusso and Ludovic Giuly, coupled with the return to full fitness of players such as Mirko Vučinić and Alberto Aquilani, who struggled with injuries last season. "Roma believe in the Scudetto" declared Corriere dello Sport after the Giallorossi's Super Cup triumph. "The wind has changed this season," Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said, adding that his players are "now able to face the best team in Italy away with no kind of fear".

Respect
Inter should have a more difficult task than last season. European champions AC Milan do not have an eight-point deduction this time and as well as being bolstered by the arrival of Emerson, they will also have Massimo Oddo and Ronaldo available from the start, both having joined the Rossoneri midway through last term. Moreover, Juventus are back in the top flight following the purgatory of Serie B and new coach Claudio Ranieri has built a team capable of causing even the mighty Inter a few problems. He has signed a host of experienced internationals – Jorge Andrade, Tiago, Zdeněk Grygera, Sergio Bernardo Almirón, Hasan Salihamidžić and Vincenzo Iaquinta – while also managing to keep hold of linchpins Gianluigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi, Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet. It is difficult to say, however, if the Bianconeri will be strong enough to challenge for the title.

Juve determined
"Other teams are already well-oiled, while we still have to get to know each other," Ranieri said. "Juventus are used to fighting for the title. I don't know if it will be this way this season, but my players have a lot of determination and a will to win, so I don't want to limit their enthusiasm." The likes of US Città di Palermo, ACF Fiorentina, S.S. Lazio and UC Sampdoria have also greatly reinforced their squads and are ready to spring a surprise, while the return of sleeping giants Genoa CFC and Napoli Soccer from Serie B should help rejuvenate the league as a whole after a difficult year. Inter may be favourites once again, but the Nerazzurri will surely face higher hurdles in their dash for the finishing line this time round.

Materazzi May Stage November Comeback

Inter and Azzurri star Marco Materazzi was feared out for as long as six months after sustaining a severe thigh injury against Hungary. However, following surgery, the "Matrix" could be back in action as early as November...

Marco Materazzi could be back in time for the end of the Champions League group stages after it emerged that his recovery will be quicker than first thought.

"Matrix" suffered a severe thigh injury and general trauma after a Hungarian player landed on him during Italy's midweek international defeat, team doctors fearing the worst.

However, he has since overcome the trauma and come through an operation. With the internal bleeding fully stopped, he could be back in action by the end of November.

Materazzi picked up his 39th cap in the Hungary defeat, although doctors claim that, had his thigh bruising been left any longer, it could well have been his last.

The Internazionale defender is a major loss for his club as it enters the new Serie A season against Udinese on Sunday, while the national side will lose his presence ahead of their grudge Euro 2008 qualifier with France.

Serie A Preview: Inter-Udinese

Who: Inter vs Udinese When: Sunday, 26th August 2007, kick-off 15:00 CET Where: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan

Inter Kick Off Against Bogey Team Udinese

Italian champions and on-paper Scudetto favorites Inter take on Udinese, a side who have caused them no few problems in past years, in their first game of the new Serie A season. Indeed, in last year’s record-breaking season, it was Udinese who put an end to the Nerazzurri’s amazing run of 17 consecutive victories with a 1-1 draw at San Siro, and they were the only side not to lose against them last year.

The Bianconeri club have signed a number of impressive players like Azzurri hero Fabio Quagliarella, who scored a brace in the recent game in Lithuania for Italy, Antonio Floro Flores, Giandomenico Mesto, among others. They will want to do everything in their power to make the fans forget about the underachievement of the last two seasons, when despite having some very impressive squads available, they finished in 10th place twice in succession.

With ambitious attack-minded coach Pasquale Marino coming over from Catania, they seem to have recruited a man who fits in perfectly with the club’s philosophy. Certainly it will not be an easy debut against Inter, but considering the often positive results Udinese have achieved recently against the Nerazzurri, a surprise may be on the cards at San Siro.

Will Inter Continue Where They Left Off?

After winning 97 points out of 114 last season, an absolute record, it’s logical that Inter are considered favorites in this new Serie A season. With the high-profile signings of striker David Suazo, who had an impressive pre-season, from Cagliari, and Roma defender Christian Chivu, it would seem the Nerazzurri have become even more unbeatable. However, as we know football is not an exact science, and that was proved in last weekend’s “curtain-raiser” to the Italian season, the Supercup final against Roma, in which Inter deservedly lost 1-0 against the Coppa Italia holders.

It was quite a subdued performance from the Nerazzurri, who could have conceded more than once in the first half had new Roma purchase Ludovic Giuly not missed a couple of sitters. In the first half they were completely outplayed, and seemed to suffer from a typical case of over-confidence, raising many questions about their mentality and attitude. At times it seemed as if Inter had gone back to their period under coach Hector Cuper, considering their highly defensive and negative approach to the game.

Ultimately Roma won the match thanks to a penalty converted by Daniele De Rossi. Old ghosts seemed to haunt the Inter squad throughout this match. There is the feeling that the team might suffer the intense pressure that surrounds them once again this year. While last season was indeed a triumphant one for Inter, that included many convincing displays and victories against top teams like Roma, Milan, Lazio, and Fiorentina, it’s undeniable that the penalisations inflicted to the latter three teams after “Calciopoli” facilitated Inter’s task hugely (although it must be said that Inter showed they were the best by winning all the direct encounters against these teams except for the home game against Roma).

From January on, perhaps even earlier, it was clear that the gaps between Inter and other teams in the league were massive and there was no real competition for them. This season, all teams start level and Juventus are back, although it’s hard to see this newly assembled team competing for the Scudetto already, even if they have the “advantage” of not playing in the Champions League. Also teams with a proud tradition like Napoli and Genoa have found their way to the top flight again. So it’s likely Inter will have to keep their concentration high throughout the season and many crunch encounters are bound to take place even in the final months of the season.

High Level Of Competitiveness

It’s a much different situation compared to last year, and Inter will have to show they are able to cope with it. Under coach Luciano Spalletti, Roma are more and more a force to be reckoned with, and having signed the likes of Giuly, Juan, Mauro Esposito, and most recently Cicinho, they now have the squad depth required to compete for a long tournament like the Serie A (although they might suffer from a lack of an out-and-out striker, and the squad is still not quite as big as Inter’s).

Milan, meanwhile, come off the back of a morale-boosting, and somewhat unexpected, Champions League victory. After a season in which their competitiveness in Serie A was dimished due to the points deduction and a shoddy pre-season preparation (as they had to suddenly come back from vacation when they learned they had to play a Champions League qualifier), the Rossoneri will want to show that they are not inferior to Inter and that they have the consistency to win in Italy as well. Particularly the two derby defeats Milan suffered last season have not gone down well and they are thirsty for revenge.

Another potential problem, and it is not a minor one, is the serious injury occurred to defender Marco Materazzi during last Wednesday’s international friendly. The Italian international was monumental last season, even managing to score 10 goals, but above all his defensive displays were faultless. Whereas before the last World Cup he was prone to the odd howler and silly outbursts of rage that frequently got him sent off, after playing such an important part in Italy’s triumph in Germany, his growth as a player and also in his attitude has been exponential. He was the true leader of this Inter team, a player who with his grit and determination set an example to all his team mates, and was exactly the type of character the club were looking for.

Especially for his inspirational presence on the pitch, he will be a massive loss for Inter in the first few months of the season. It remains to be seen just how Inter coach Roberto Mancini will handle this situation, whether he will opt to play Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba in the center of the defence or move Christian Chivu to that position. In any case, the Inter defense will definitely suffer severely from the absence of Materazzi.

All in all, it promises to be an exciting three-way battle for the title, with teams like Juventus and Fiorentina potentially capable of inserting themselves in the race at various stages of the season.

TEAM NEWS

Inter

Materazzi is the only player out injured.

Probable Formation (4-3-1-2): Julio Cesar; Maicon, Cordoba, Samuel, Chivu; Zanetti, Cambiasso, Vieira; Stankovic, Suazo, Ibrahimovic.

Udinese

No injury worries for the Friulani.

Probable formation (4-3-3): Handanovic; Mesto, Coda, Zapata, Felipe; Pinzi, Obodo, Felipe; Quagliarella, Floro Flores, Asamoah.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

David Suazo (Inter)

The Honduran striker has had an impressive pre-season after being a very hyped up signing from Cagliari, even though in the first “official” match, the Italian Supercup, he didn’t quite set the world alight. Nevertheless, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s skill and vision combined with Suazo’s speed and physical strength could make for a lethal combination in attack. In any case, the player has already become a hero to the Inter fans after refusing to sign with Milan, who also made an offer for him, after he had already given his word to the Nerazzurri.

Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese)

Last season this 23-year-old Italian international made the headlines thanks to a series of spectacular goals with Sampdoria. At the end of last season he made his starting debut with the Azzurri in an away game against Lithuania, and became a national hero after scoring two brilliant goals in what was a crucial qualifying match. He was being followed by a number of major clubs both Italian and foreign, but in the end it was Udinese who opted to buy out the other half of his contract from Sampdoria, and perhaps it is good for Quagliarella to play another season or two in a solid team like Udinese to confirm himself and continue his development. He still has a lot of time.

Serie A 2007/08 Inter milan Vs Udinese

Serie A Inter Milan Previews: Can Inter Rub It In?

Following a record breaking season which saw the Nerazzurri claim their 15th Scudetto, Inter Milan will look to defend their Serie A title against challenges from Champions League holders AC Milan, a returning ‘Old Lady’ (Juventus), as well as last season’s runners-up Roma.
Inter shattered numerous records last season. They started with an eight point advantage over Milan, but extended that advantage over the course of the season to the point where the thirty-six point differential was the greatest between the sides ever in a league season.
Inter set or equalled records for the most goals scored in a season in the club’s history, the most points in a league campaign in Europe, the most victories in totality and away from home in a Serie A season and the greatest number of consecutive wins in all competitions, thanks to a number of quality displays all over the pitch.
With almost 500 games under his belt for the Nerazzurri, Zanetti took out the disappointment of being excluded from Argentina’s 2006 World Cup squad by producing another stellar season in Inter’s colours. The ever reliable Argentine not only fulfilled his duties on the right hand side but also performed well at left back and in midfield when injuries, suspensions and circumstances dictated those requirements.
For all of his issues regarding temperament, Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic marked his first season with Inter by scoring 15 goals in Serie A. He also saw red on three occasions but it’s a part of his make up - it can let him down, but also makes him quite the competitor he is.
It wasn’t just Ibrahimovic who found the net with regularity, Argentine forward Hernan Crespo also scored 14 goals in Serie A (his second spell with Inter). Inter have retained Crespo’s services and will expect another strong season from ‘Valdanito’.
While Materazzi will forever go down as the player remembered for being on the receiving end of a Zinedine Zidane head-butt in the 2006 World Cup final - after a wag of the tongue that set millions wagging worldwide - there are few who can deny that the Italian defender had the best season of his career during Inter’s record breaking campaign.
This season he’ll be joined in defence by new signing Cristian Chivu who left Roma for Inter. The Romanian captain is a class act and while strengthening their own backline with his addition, Inter have weakened potential title rivals Roma in the process. Colombian defender Nelson Rivas has also arrived at the club from River Plate.
In midfield Inter were able to count on consistent performances from Esteban Cambiasso, Olivier Dacourt, Patrick Vieira and Dejan Stankovic, with Figo's imagination getting the better of his battle-weary legs. They will be joined by Chilean midfielder Luis Jiménez as the South American influence at Inter continues to be prevalent, with no fewer than 16 players from the continent in the squad.
Other than the signing of Chivu, the most significant addition to Inter’s ranks over the summer was that of Honduran forward David Suazo from Cagliari. Suazo was involved in a tug of war between both Milan clubs; a battle which was won by Inter after AC Milan withdrew their offer to Suazo upon the disclosure that he had already penned a deal with the Nerazzurri. Suazo’s pace and power will provide even more options for Inter going forward. And along with Ibrahimovic, Crespo, Adriano and Julio Cruz it’s clear to see that Inter have their bases covered going forward.
The most notable departure from the Italian champions was that of Fabio Grosso (to Lyon). However, Inter have kept together all of the players who played significant roles in winning the title and will be in pole position to retain their crown once their campaign begins at home to Udinese. At least on "paper" - a word that has been used quite often by their detractors!
Last season, Inter began the campaign as favourites for the title due to the relegation of Juventus and the eight point handicap that Milan were handed. In emphatic style Mancini’s men stamped their mark on the 2006/07 season.

Ibrahimovic Has Eyes Only For Inter

Ahead of the start of the Serie A season, Zlatan Ibrahimovic insists he is happily settled at Inter Milan.

There have been doubts about Zlatan Ibrahimovic's future given some differences over a new contract, and latest reports from Madrid that Real are targeting him again has set tongues wagging.
However, the Swede has sent out an assurance, insisting that as much he as his family were happily settled at the club.
"I don’t care about any other sides, I’m only thinking about Inter," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I’m happy here and so is my family, leaving couldn’t be a good solution."
He also refused to read too much into the Italian Super Cup defeat to Roma.
"We haven’t played together enough," he argued. "The other day we just weren’t quite there, but we are on our way slowly but surely.
"My preparations are the same as usual, but I have been suffering with a groin problem and have had to take baby steps this summer.
"Everything seems fine now and I’m stronger than before."

Italian Press: Upset Adriano To Leave Inter For Madrid

The Correire dello Sport has boldly claimed that the Inter management is set to lose all patience with troubled striker Adriano - with Real Madrid are said to be waiting in the wings...
Rome-based Il Corriere dello Sport claims that Real Madrid have their eye on Inter forward Adriano - with the Milan side apparently eager to hear from the Spanish capital. The paper claims that the Madrid hierarchy has been brought around to Bernd Schuster's (alleged) way of thinking; namely, the club needs another 'number 9' alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy to offer true squad depth. The article goes on to claim that Soldado, who himself insists that he is part of the coach's plans, draws no water with Schuster, and that Adriano is an ideal candidate.Of course, if Madrid does feel this way, they have alternatives: Huntelaar of Ajax, Diego Milito of Zaragoza, and even Inter's Ibrahimovic. But none have the same "buyability" as Adriano. The player was not one of the nerazzurri club's leading lights during pre-season, and has recently been subject to much media attention over alleged all-night boozing sessions last season. With Inter seemingly building their front line around Ibrahimovic and Suazo, the Milan club may relish the chance to wash its hands of Adriano, should Madrid's interest prove anywhere near concrete. But, for now, it is just paper talk. Although, stranger things have happened already this summer...

Zanetti: Inter Milan deserve favourites tag

Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti insists they deserve to be regarded as title favourites.
"David Suazo is a formidable player and he knows Serie A very well, so he can trouble everyone," he told Il Giornale.
"Cristian Chivu has experience despite his youth and will also do really well. He is important because the defence comes first and then you build a winning side around that.
"Milan have 20 days left to make a move and they might, but I wouldn't be scared even if Ronaldinho arrived - we are inferior to nobody."

Internazionale History

1908 - At the beginning of the century, Inter F.C. versus Milan A.C. derbies did not even exist. At that time there was only "Milan Cricket and Football Club". But the night on March the 9th 1908, "Internazionale Football Club of Milan" came through. It was called "Internazionale" because it was open to all players and not only to the Italian ones (the first captain, Manktl, was Swiss). It was the result of a group of rebels, previously associated to the Milan A.C.. That is how Inter was born. The colours of the club were gold, black and blue, and the tradition has been carried through.

1909-10 - Ettore Strauss takes over as president and Inter are Champions for the 1st time.

1910-11 - Carlo De Medici becomes the 3rd President of the Club.

1912-13 - Emilio Hirzel becomes the 4th President of the Club.

1914-15 - Luigi Ansbacher becomes the 5th President of the Club immediately followed by Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone who becomes the 6th, in the same year.

1919-20 - Giorgio Hulss becomes the 7th President and Inter are Champions for the 2nd time.

1920-21 - Francesco Mauro becomes the 8th President of the Club.

1923-24 - Enrico Olivetti becomes the 9th President of the Club.

1926-27 - Senatore Borletti becomes the 10th President of the Club.

1928-29 - Inter is forced to change its name to "Ambrosiana-Inter"

1929-30 - Ernesto Torrusio becomes the 11th President and Inter are Champions for the 3rd time.

1930-31 - Oreste Simonotti becomes the 12th President of the Club.

1932-33 - Ferdinando Pozzani becomes the 13th President and Inter are runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1933-34 - Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1934-35 - Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1937-38 - Champions for the 4th time.

1938-39 - Won the Coppa Italia for the first time.

1939-40 - Champions for the 5th time.

1940-41 - Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1942-43 - Carlo Masseroni becomes the 14th President of the Club.

1944-46 - Serie 'A' interrupted because of World War II.

1946 - The Club changes its name back to "Internazionale"

1948-49 - Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1950-51 - Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1952-53 - Champions for the 6th time.

1953-54 - Champions for the 7th time.

1955-56 - Angelo Moratti takes over as the 15th President of the Club and the "Moratti" era starts.

1961-62 - Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1962-63 - Champions for the 8th time.

1963-64 - Won the European Champions Cup and the Intercontinental Cup but loses the Italian Championship on a decider with Bologna.

1964-65 - Won the European Champions Cup and the Intercontinental Cup for the second time and become Italian Champions for the 9th time.

1965-66 - Champions for the 10th time.

1966-67 - Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1968-69 - Ivanoe Fraizzoli becomes the 16th President of the Club.

1969-70 - Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1970-71 - Champions for the 11th time.

1977-78 - Won the Coppa Italia for the 2nd time.

1979-80 - Champions for the 12th time.

1981-82 - Won the Coppa Italia for the 3rd time.

1984-85 - Ernesto Pellegrini becomes the 17th President of the Club.

1995-96 - Massimo Moratti the son of Angelo Moratti becomes the 18th President of the Club.

1997-98 - Won the UEFA Cup for the 3rd time. Runners-up in the Italian Championship.

1998-1999 - A disastrous year or as Massimo Moratti put it "Annus Horribilis". It is indeed a fitting name for last season. A year which saw Inter struggling in a multitude of problems culminating in the futile swapping of 4 different coaches, the elimination in the quarterfinals of the Champions league and elimination in the semi finals of Coppa Italia.

1999-2000 - 4th place in Italian Championship.

2000-2001 - Two years ago, Massimo Moratti defined the year just ended as "Annus Horribilis" or Horrible Year. It is almost a fitting name also for last season. A year which Inter started off very badly with the defeat against Reggina in the first day of the Italian League followed by the sudden departure of Marcello Lippi. The team later plodded on through the season with Marco Tardelli at a modest mid-table performance level.

2001-2002 - Inter is very close to winning its scudetto number 14. Leaders until the last match, one point ahead of Juventus, they lose against Lazio. Scudetto goes to Juventus, and second place to Roma. As in 1967, the last match of the championship is fatal to nerazzurri.

2004-2005 - Inter win the Coppa Italia beating Roma in a two legged final.
